Tips & Tricks

Mastering Your MDF Headboard DIY

To help you get the best results from your raw MDF headboard, we’ve compiled a few tips and tricks to guide you through the process. Whether you’re painting, upholstering, or using our headboards as wall paneling, here’s everything you need to know:

1. Prepping for Paint

Before you break out the paintbrushes, give your headboard a light sand to remove any rough spots. Use 150-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat—be sure to cover all surfaces for a complete seal. Follow up with two coats of your chosen paint to finish it off. Remember, the key is to make sure the board is completely sealed to protect it from moisture.

2. Choose the Right Paint

For a finish that’s both stylish and practical, we recommend using a Resene Waterborne Enamel tinted to your preferred colour. Your local Resene expert can help you choose the right finish. If you’re using water-based primer, be sure to use water-based paint on top (oil-based paint won’t stick!). However, you can apply water-based paint over an oil-based primer.

3. Sanding Tips

If you’re rolling or brush painting, stick to 150-grit sandpaper for a smooth base. Feeling fancy? For a professional spray finish, you can sand down to 240 grit for that ultra-smooth feel before applying the paint.

4. Sealing for Moisture Protection

A good, thick layer of paint will keep your MDF headboard sealed and protected from moisture. Be sure to cover every surface—edges and all!

5. Upholstering Your Headboard

We’re not upholstering experts, but if you’re planning on tackling this DIY project, make sure to use a minimum of 6mm staples. There are loads of helpful YouTube tutorials that can walk you through the process step by step.

6. Achieving a Pro Paint Finish

Want that smooth, professional look? After sanding with 240-grit sandpaper, use a spray gun for an even and flawless paint finish. This is especially handy for larger surfaces!

7. Mounting Your Headboard

Our headboards come with slots designed for easy mounting. You can secure them to your bed frame using bed screws through the slots. If you’re using the headboard as wall paneling, simply apply liquid nails (or similar adhesive) to the back and pin it in place for a secure fit.

8. Get Creative!

The sky’s the limit when it comes to decorating your headboard! Whether you’re adding stenciling, paint effects, or trimming—there are no rules. Do what makes you happy and turn your space into something uniquely yours.

9. DIY Supplies Checklist
